Skills and Attributes of Smart Library Specialists: A literature Review

Abstract

The study aims to survey the Arabic and foreign intellectual output published on the topic of skills and attributes of smart library specialists. The descriptive method was adopted using a survey approach to compile the intellectual contributions in this field. Additionally, a bibliographic analysis approach was employed to identify the qualitative, quantitative, chronological, and thematic characteristics of the published research. The study identified approximately 53 studies related to the skills of smart library specialists and other relevant topics.
The findings revealed that the most commonly used research methodologies in the reviewed studies were the descriptive-analytical method, followed by the survey method. The most frequently utilized data collection tools included questionnaires, personal interviews, and content analysis. Moreover, the majority of the reviewed studies concluded that there is a significant deficiency in the technological and administrative skills of library and information specialists, particularly in utilizing information technology.
Furthermore, the studies recommended the revision and modernization of library and information science curricula to align with the standards set by professional library associations and federations, ensuring that academic programs keep pace with the latest advancements in the field.
