This literature review aims to analyze and survey the Arabic and English literature published between 2018 and 2024 concerning the use of Metaverse technologies in supporting information institutions and their services. The study seeks to present a comprehensive overview of research trends in this emerging field and to explore the existing knowledge gaps. Adopting a descriptive methodology using the survey approach, the literature was classified into four thematic areas: theoretical foundations, legal and technical challenges in information institutions, future outlooks, and a dedicated axis on Metaverse applications in knowledge and information institutions. The findings identified a total of 91 relevant sources, with English-language literature accounting for the majority (72.53%) compared to 27.47% in Arabic. A noticeable increase in publications was observed during 2023 and 2024. The results also revealed the dominance of scholarly articles and a variation in depth and focus across themes. These findings underscore the need for more applied and forward-looking studies within the Arab context, with an emphasis on developing clear models and roadmaps for adopting Metaverse technologies in information institutions.
