The study addresses open source software in the field of libraries and information in terms of origin and development. It presented the motives and justifications for using open source software represented by freeware, flexibility, security, wide support and development cost . It clarified the difference between open source systems and commercial systems in terms of concept ,security',,cost development speed and program code. It represented the requirements for the success of open source software, represented by an administrative support group training, integration, use and opens source data source data . It highlighted the advantages included its free ,easy test and cost less for hardware it’s also highlighted disadvantages included the luck of usage studies , the lack of system documentation and the lack of personal support . It indicates the sites that provide open source software and addressed the author’s literary rights such as the right publish, attribution, respect and withdraw of the work in open source software . It pointed out the economic dimension and quality standards of open source software. The study concluded with how to use open source software systems in libraries and information centers
